Taste of Poland

The "Wieliczka" Salt Mine is one of the most valuable monuments of material and spiritual culture in Poland. Each year it is visited by more than one million tourists from all over the world."
When searching Instagram with the locations «Kopalnia Soli „Wieliczka"», «Wieliczka Salt Mine – Krakow» and the hashtag #wieliczkasaltmine, I found millions of photos. Among them were pictures taken during tours, selfies with sculptures, food, a famous chandelier and others. What was very surprising was the fact that there were a lot of similar scenes, comments and angles. The most intriguing were the photos of tourists licking salt walls, sculptures, ceilings and floors, both in groups or alone.
The tourists in those pictures were licking the walls with passion, love, and disgust, either laughing or play-acting different situations. Euphamistic comments were added to most of the photos. Because of that, absolutely unconsciously, strangers created an entirely unique interpretation of that place. Thanks to the activity of users on Instagram, the Wieliczka Salt mine turned from a historical place into a thing of fetish.
